There seems to be a general
misconception in most sport communities that being in shape for your sport
season is something you do two weeks before your season starts. If this is your
approach you are putting yourself behind the eight ball. Being prepared for
your sport season is a year long process that should begin a few weeks after
your current season ends. Depending on the level of the athlete the off time
period could range from 1-2 weeks. During this time your strength &
conditioning program is put on hold for the body to recover from the sports
season coming to an end.

Being on a year round strength
& conditioning program is a must if you want to be the best athlete you can
be. Everything is dependent on your athletic ability and strength &
conditioning experience when figuring out how often you should be training. A
general rule of thumb is during the off season training volume will be higher
and as the season begins the volume of training will decrease. So if during the
off season you are training 3-4 times a week, during the in season the volume
will be cut to 2-3 times a week. Again this is all going to be based upon the
athlete’s level, both on the field and in the weight room.

A solid strength & conditioning
program is what is going to separate the good from great athletes. It’s that
little extra, great athletes are willing to give to reach the level of high
school, college or professional athlete. Are you going to put in the time to be
great?
